AUTHOR’S WORD: THE INHERITORS

My life as a surfer and surfboard shaper has brought me into contact with people from all walks of life: Doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs and more than a generous sprinkling of mavericks, misfits and down-right outlaws. I always only knew them as surfers or sailors until the headlines informed me along with the rest of world of their true identities. So much so that I’ve always considered myself to be the skinny little guy running around dodging raindrops when some of the other guys were out there running drugs, dodging bullets, pulling-off cons, heists, assassinations or fomenting revolution. And being from that school of being able to identify a trend and advance it to its own logical and most ridiculous conclusion. Something like the six layers of separation in a head-on collision with tomorrow’s headlines.

In the case of The Inheritors: It started in the mid-seventies with a talk and the subject I chose when I asked to give talk to the Lions Club in Kiama, NSW during the troubles in Northern Ireland and the subject I chose was ‘Guerilla Warfare – The poor man’s war.’ And described the horrors of terrorism aimed at innocent citizens to bring the war home where it hurts most. Prophetic as it was. Nobody was prepared to admit that any such thing could ever happen outside of Ireland or the middle-east.

I was twenty-three chapters into the Inheritors when the terrorists hi-jacked three planes and crashed them into the Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. Needless to say, I dropped the manuscript whose story of terrorism begins when two Afghani nationals set off a bomb in San Francisco, faster than a ticking parcel in an Irish pub and didn’t come back to it for several years. All of this so that Medford Haley could utter, “Omar, you dumb bastard! The answer’s never been in a first millennial maintenance manual,” and Mohammed could reply, “Do you think we have finally gotten their attention?”
